Walking On Recycled Glass Erosion is a constant issue for many Floridian beaches. In the past, this issue was solved by dredging sand from the ocean floor and piped to shore to replenish the beaches. However, this proved to be very costly (approaching $50 million) mainly because of stricter reef protection laws.

The Broward County are looking into using recycled glass to help alleviate their shortage of sand. This process includes crushing glass into tiny grains then mix them with regular sand.

"It is only natural, backers of the idea say, because sand is the main ingredient in glass."

There are many benefits from this project. One of which is turning glass back to its natural state, sand. Another is that it helps "reduce waste stream that goes to our landfills" and "generate materials that could be available for the beaches."

It's Never Too Late to Stop Hitting the Bottle Bottled water is one of the most expensive and environmentally-damaging parts of daily American life. The bottles are derived primarily from fossil fuels which consume more than 1.5 million barrels of oil each year, enough to fuel some 100,000 US cars in the same amount of time.

Think you're escaping "unhealthy" tap water by choosing bottled? Think again: Pepsi Co.'s Aquafina is tap water! Plus, tap water may actually be healthier: the FDA allows bottled water to contain a certain amount of fecal matter (ick), whereas the EPA doesn't allow municipal water systems to contain any. Plus, many times the water is coming from half-way around the world, requiring exorbitant amounts of energy. All this, AND, at as much as $2.50 per liter ($10 per gallon), bottled water costs almost three times as much as gasoline, as well as between 240 and 10,000 times the cost of tap water.

By the way if you didn't know, it took us a good few weeks to collect and sort everything. Once again, thank you!

Don't forget about Jumbo Drop Yard Sale on Labor Day at the new parking lot next to the new Art building. Don't buy too much (and please don't buy clothes hangers at all) because you can get them for cheaper at the yard sale. Have a great summer!
